Thinking about making your next career move? Here are Five things that you should be doing to land your next job:
Know What You Are Looking For
Have an understanding of what it is that’s motivating you to find something new: Is it specific benefits you’re not getting? Project exposure is lacking? Or is it simply for a higher salary?
This will help you identify when an opportunity is right for you and what to prioritise looking for.
Work With A Recruiter
Recruiters will have a broad network of clients and off-the-market opportunities that you may not otherwise have present itself.
They will also bring a variety of companies that all offer something different, from quicker progression routes or unique projects to work on.
Be Realistic With Salary Expectations
Everyone would love to be earning more money, but sometimes we need to manage expectations and have an idea of the market situation. Yes you can get an uplift on your salary - will it always be a $20K uplift? unfortunately not.
Overselling your salary may restrict your potential opportunities. Make sure you can justify what you are looking for.
Include Projects In Your Resume
Including the projects you’ve worked on & their values can help a company understand your potential and match your experience with upcoming projects.
Highlight the role you had in those projects and, where possible, show a variety of different sectors that you’ve worked in.
Keep Your Options Open
Consider the smaller companies and stay open-minded.
Sometimes, it will be a company that you least expect that can provide you with the best opportunity, whether it’s more progression or greater exposure to all aspects of a project
It goes without saying.. Prepare for any interviews that you have..
Research the company - look at their website & LinkedIn, speak with employees and understand what it is they do & their core values
Have questions prepared beforehand - it is about making sure they are the right company for you as much as it is about making sure you are right for them
